Creating and maintaining a safe work environment is a critical aspect of sustaining a healthy workforce. Workplace safety programs fit into worksite wellness programs. It may be wise to create a separate safety committee or subcommittee. To maximize benefits the workplace safety program must have the following elements:

• A commitment from management
• Active participation by employees
• Incentives such as recognizing individuals and teams who demonstrate safe practices
• Proper equipment available to employees
• Safety analyses to assess the root causes of incidents and assess program effectiveness.
