One of the reasons some businesses start worksite wellness programs is to see a positive return on investment. A comprehensive literature review of the financial impact of worksite wellness programs reported cost savings from $2.50 to $10.10 per dollar spent due to reduced absenteeism and an average of $3.48 per dollar spent for health care costs. Another review found employees who participate in worksite wellness programs have 25-30% lower medical and absenteeism costs than those that do not participate. All of the data from both reviews came from studies designed and reported by the company implementing the program, so savings may be inflated. An important thing to remember regarding worksite wellness programs and return on investment is that these investments are long term in nature and it may take time to realize improvements in health and savings (Goetzel & Ozminkowski, 2008).
