Barriers

Different types of barriers present themselves in different worksite wellness programs. The barriers faced at one company will be different than those faced at another. There are, however, some common barriers and anticipating them in the planning phase helps prevent them from becoming issues. Some employers feel it is inappropriate to interfere in their employees’ private lives. Others feel program activities that take place during the day are distracting for employees and harm productivity. Other barriers are financial in nature. It can be difficult to isolate which program activities are most fiscally beneficial. Some employers find it challenging to invest in programs that show positive return on investment only after several years. Finally, many small businesses lack the resources and infrastructure to implement programs found to be successful by larger employers (Goetzel & Ozminkowski, 2008).
