Evaluation

Evaluation is one of the most important components of a worksite wellness program.  Process and outcome evaluation are two methods to get a program started and keep it successful over time.  Despite the need for program evaluation, many organizations do not evaluate their programs.  There are several possible reasons for this.  Program evaluation can be rather intimidating.  Some feel they are not statisticians and are not qualified to perform a complex evaluation.  However, complex evaluations are not necessary.  Some simple forms of evaluation that don’t require complex statistics include tracking participation rates, employee satisfaction surveys, and looking at expenses over time.  Another reason evaluation may not be conducted is out of fear.  Particularly with outcome evaluation, showing a program to be unsuccessful can be damaging to the wellness program.  It is important to remember that change takes time and programs must be continuously modified to best serve the employees.  Evaluation is a tool for learning about your organization, employees, and wellness program.  The knowledge gained should be applied to creating a better wellness program to better serve employees and create a healthier work environment.
